Parliament faces mounting pressure to eliminate uncapped travel allowances for federal politicians’ spouses amid community outrage over excessive spending. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is resisting changes to rules that permit MPs and senators to charge taxpayers for their partners’ travel, with some politicians spending over $100,000 on spousal travel since 2022. Recent examples include Trade Minister Don Farrell’s $90,000 in wife’s travel expenses and Nationals MP Andrew Wilcox charging taxpayers $123,000 for his wife’s Canberra trips.
