Andrias and Brenda Claassen, a couple in their 70s, have lived in Australia for 16 years on temporary visas after their Queensland swimming pool business was destroyed by Cyclone Yasi. The Albanese government is demanding $90,000 for a two-year visa extension, while the couple faces potential deportation to South Africa despite having children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are Australian citizens. They have paid taxes for 16 years without receiving Medicare or Centrelink benefits and are appealing to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke to grant them permanent residency.
