Pacific Islands Forum underway after several leaders pull out

This year’s high-stakes annual Pacific leaders meeting has faced a significant blow with outgoing forum chair and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale making a shock departure.

Wale was forced to leave Palau after a no-confidence motion was filed against him at home.

Leaders from Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Samoa and Kiribati will also not be attending this year’s forum in person.

The absentees have raised doubts over whether regional condemnation of China’s recent missile test in the region is possible.
