A pygmy blue whale has died after becoming stranded off the coast of Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory on Friday.
Researchers believe it is the first time a pygmy blue whale has ever been sighted in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers and experts from Charles Darwin University hope samples gathered from the whale’s carcass will shed light on the mystery.
