Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within just five years, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. As Europe marks 80 years since the end of World War II, fears are rising that history could repeat itself. Russia has deepened its ties with China, North Korea and Iran, building its military capabilities at a pace that NATO struggles to match. Experts warn that Vladimir Putin’s war machine is accelerating rather than slowing down, and that the threat of a direct clash with NATO is more real than many want to believe.
Defence analysts Dr Malcolm Davis and Dr Jessica Genauer explain what this could mean for global security. They highlight how Putin may coordinate with Xi Jinping over Taiwan, creating simultaneous flashpoints in Europe and Asia. Some believe the Kremlin could target NATO’s eastern frontier or the Baltic states, not through a full-scale invasion, but through a calculated strike designed to fracture NATO unity. The possibility of nuclear intimidation, cyber warfare, and attacks on infrastructure further adds to the uncertainty.
At the same time, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has exposed both its strengths and weaknesses. While Moscow has thrown enormous resources into the war, its forces have been degraded, and Europe has bolstered its own defences. The question remains whether NATO can prepare quickly enough to deter further aggression, or if America pulls back under a future Trump presidency, whether Europe is ready to stand alone.
