Multiple deaths reported after major earthquake in Japan | ABC NEWS


A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck the Japanese island of Kyushu on Tuesday, according to the country’s meteorological survey, toppling buildings and sparking fires.

Five people have been confirmed dead, including two women who were at the Aeon Mall shopping centre in Kumamoto prefecture, where an explosion occurred following the quake.

As night fell on Tuesday, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported 10 people were unaccounted for in the mall. Multiple people are also unaccounted for at a factory in Yatsushiro city, where the tip of a chimney fell down, NHK reported.
