Meet the Afghan women’s refugee football team
The Afghan women’s refugee football team has been selected – and most of the players now call Australia home after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
Women in Afghanistan are not allowed to play sport, access secondary and higher education or most forms of employment, while ‘vice and virtue’ laws introduced last year restrict them from using their voices in public.
Ahead of matches this weekend, team members say they want to provide hope to women living under the Taliban regime.
