Zelenskyy says Russian airspace ‘effectively closed’

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned airlines and insurance companies on Wednesday that the presence of Ukrainian drones had made Russian skies dangerous to use and that they were effectively closed.

Russia has stepped up its air attacks on Kyiv and other cities in recent weeks, with its latest strike killing 12 people and injuring many more, the sixth straight day of intense assaults on the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine has responded with frequent drone strikes on Russian targets, many associated with the country’s oil industry as well as retail sites.

While European and US carriers do not fly over Russia due to the war, the airspace is used by airlines from countries like China, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states. US airlines have said using Russian airspace has given these carriers an advantage in saving time and fuel.
