The indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! has sparked an outcry from politicians, Hollywood figures and free speech organisations, many warning that critics of Donald Trump are being systematically silenced.
ABC announced that Kimmel’s late-night show would be pulled from the air after comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s killing prompted major affiliate groups, including Nexstar and Sinclair, to refuse to broadcast the programme. The move comes just weeks after CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert’s late-night show — officially for financial reasons, though some critics suspect his frequent criticism of Trump was a factor.
FCC chair Brendan Carr defended the affiliates’ decision, calling it “an important turning point” and accusing Kimmel and other late-night hosts of pushing a “narrow political ideology.” He also warned ABC’s affiliates that their broadcast licenses could be at risk if action wasn’t taken. Critics say the remarks were effectively government pressure on a private network.
