Chinese scholar and IDF officer argue over Gaza
Chinese political scientist Yan Xuetong said “no one believes” in “propaganda” about Gaza spread by the Israeli government during a discussion with Israel Defense Forces officer Elad Shoshan. The clip has gone viral since it was posted online.
Yan, who is dean of international relations at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, also accused Israel of killing more than 70,000 civilians in Gaza, which Shoshan said was “not fact”.
Yan told Shoshan: “The facts are decided by the international community, it’s not decided by your government. Your government has no legitimacy and the right to decide or define what is fact,” at a defence forum in Beijing on Wednesday.
An independent UN inquiry recently found that 46 per cent of the 65,000 people killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023 were women and children. About 1,200 people were killed in the October 7 2023, Hamas attack that triggered the war and 251 were taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies.
