Anthony Albanese’s attempt to cosy up to Donald Trump was awkwardly derailed when the US President was made aware of Kevin Rudd’s presence.
Hosting Anthony Albanese and his Australian delegation at the White House on Tuesday (AEDT), the US President was asked if he was “concerned” by Mr Rudd’s past remarks.
“There’s been some concern in Australia it’s taken nine months to get this meeting. Have you had any concerns with this administration? With its stance on Palestine, climate change or even things the Australian ambassador has said about you in the past?” a reporter asked.
Before becoming Australia’s envoy in Washington, former prime minister Rudd had called Mr Trump a “village idiot” and a “traitor to the West”.
“I don’t know anything about him,” Mr Trump told reporters. “If he said bad (things), then maybe he’d like to apologise. I really don’t know.”
He then turned to Mr Albanese, who was sat next to him. “Did the ambassador say something?” Mr Trump asked. “Don’t tell me.”
“Where is he? Is he still working for you?” he asked Mr Albanese, who awkwardly pointed out Mr Rudd was sitting on the opposite side of the table as the room erupted.
Mr Trump turned and eyeballed him. “You said bad things?”
