Huge fireball destroys waste facility in western Sydney
More than 200 firefighters tackled an inferno that engulfed a waste facility at North St Marys in Sydney’s west over the weekend.
A huge fireball erupted, sending flames up to 150 metres into the sky above the Kurrajong Road site, as flames took hold just before 11pm on Saturday.
A large chemical tank was blown into the air and fist-sized chunks of concrete rained down on emergency services during the explosion.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while working to contain blaze, which authorities say was one of the biggest seen in western Sydney for years.
