Horrific fatal crash closes M1 major commuter route | 9 News Australia
Breaking news out of the New South Wales and Queensland border as a horrific, fatal truck crash completely shuts down a major southbound section of the M1 highway. The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of the morning at approximately 2:30 AM, just moments before the entry point to the Tugun tunnel near Tweed Heads.
Emergency services rushed to the scene where a Hertz hire truck, carrying two occupants, collided violently with a roadside barrier. Tragically, a passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency service workers successfully freed the driver from the wreckage, who was then transported via road by New South Wales paramedics to the Gold Coast University Hospital. The driver remains in a serious but stable condition.
In this live report, Channel 9 Today presenter Mia Glover joins from the overpass at Stewart Road in Currumbin to provide critical traffic updates. With the M1 closed in both directions for several hours while forensic police carry out investigations and clear the heavy wreckage, major delays are impacting the morning commute. Heavy transport vehicles and local commuters are currently being diverted back onto the Gold Coast Highway. If you are travelling across the Queensland and New South Wales border this morning, authorities strongly advise checking local traffic conditions and planning alternative routes before heading out.
