Health workers dance as final patient at Ebola treatment centre recovers

Health care workers and aid workers from Doctors Without Borders danced and sang to mark the discharge of the final Ebola patient at a treatment centre in Mongbwalu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The outbreak began in DRC and has become the deadliest in the country’s history, killing almost 5,000 people out of more than 10,000 confirmed cases since mid-May, according to health authorities.

It is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is still no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Ebola, which is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, can cause severe internal and external bleeding and organ failure. Before this latest outbreak it had already killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years.
