Violent clashes have broken out across France as more than half a million people took to the streets to protest the rising cost of living, with one demonstrator’s hand blown off, multiple blazes set and looters breaking into dozens of stores to strip them bare.
In Paris, tens of thousands marched across the east and north of the city in one major march, some shouting “Everyone hates the police” and “Macron, resign”.
“To those who clearly want to use this violence as a ‘warm-up’ before the presidential election, I say clearly: We will not let ourselves be intimidated. No one will impose their political agenda through violence,” France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu wrote on social media.
An estimated 500,000 people turned out at 1,750 rallies across the country on Saturday, according to France’s main CGT union.
“The government must stop its repression and respond immediately to the social demands,” it said in a statement, after police fired tear gas, crowd-control grenades and water canons at protesters, some of whom clashed with security forced their way into public buildings.
