Former treasurer Joe Hockey says Australia ‘could do more’ to support Palestinians
Responding to a question from SBS News, former Australian treasurer Joe Hockey told the National Press Club that he would like to see Australia “do more on the ground” to help rebuild Gaza, but added it “might not be safe for Australia to be there”.
SBS News political correspondent Rayane Tamer asked Hockey if he believed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese “made the right call in recognising Palestinian statehood”.
Hockey said he respected the PM’s views, saying he knows “they’re heartfelt”.
He went on to say that the recognition of Palestine was “all well and good”, but added: “The bottom line is, how do we help rebuild?”
“But the first thing, you can’t rebuild anything until you get peace, that’s the starting point,” he said.
Hockey suggested that Australia could provide more “financial support” through agencies such as UNICEF.
