Former FBI director James Comey maintains his innocence after being indicted

Former head of the FBI James Comey has been indicted, reportedly after pressure from US President Donald Trump.

A grand jury decided James Comey should face trial on two counts: making false statements and obstruction of justice.

These charges relate to his 2020 testimony before a Senate Judiciary Committee about the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory.

Mr Comey maintains his innocence.

James Comey became a vocal critic after being fired by Donald Trump during his first term as President.

This latest push to prosecute the former FBI head was rushed through to beat the five-year statute of limitations.

It follows Donald Trump publicly reprimanding Attorney General Pam Bondi for failing to prosecute Mr Comey and other critics.
