Flash flooding in southeast Qld following freak rainstorm

Southeast Queensland received 200mm of rain in three hours during a freak storm on Thursday, triggering flash flooding and hundreds of State Emergency Service calls.

Monthly rainfall records were broken in Nambour on the Sunshine Coast, where a running total of 401mm to Friday morning broke the old October record of 370.6mm, and in Beerburrum, in the same region, where the running monthly total rainfall of 354.2mm broke the old October record of 311.5mm.

While rain appears to be easing in Qld for now, a “multi-state severe thunderstorm outbreak” is “on the cards” this weekend, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). It predicts South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT, NSW and southeast Queensland are likely to be affected at different times on Saturday, Sunday and into Monday.

Emergency services personnel urge people to avoid driving through floodwaters.
