First female prime minister named in Morocco
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI named urban planning minister Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s prime minister, making the 50-year-old lawyer the first woman to hold the position in the Muslim kingdom.
El Mansouri, who until her nomination was also the mayor of Marrakech, was tasked with forming a new government, the Royal Palace said in a statement.
The announcement came four days after results of parliamentary elections were announced, with El Mansouri’s centrist Authenticity and Modernity Party, or PAM, receiving the most votes.
Under Morocco’s constitution, the king appoints the head of government from the political party that wins the largest number of seats in the House of Representatives.
