Federal Speaker of the House calls out poor behaviour
Thank goodness it’s Friday, especially for Speaker of the House Milton Dick.
The speaker was vocal about his disappointment in how members of federal parliament have behaved during the week.
“This parliament has not been its best this week,” Dick said.
Question Time on Thursday got off to a rocky start when the first question from Opposition leader Angus Taylor about proposed tax reform led to a wider discussion about accusations of lying.
As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese approached the dispatch box to answer the question, he was heckled by the member for Herbert, Phillip Thompson, who was promptly asked to leave.
Dick asked members of parliament to “make sure that we show respect to one another, and behaviour is improved”.
The speaker’s calls came to no avail, as three more members were ordered to leave.
On Friday, while appearing on Nine’s Today Show, Taylor admitted to calling Albanese an “arrogant prick” during this session of Question Time, but argued that worse language had been said on the House of Representatives floor.
