Dozens dead as Hurricane Melissa batters the Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic category 5 storm, has continued to barrel through the Caribbean, leaving destruction in its wake and killing at least 30 people. The weather event is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record when it hit Jamaica on Tuesday. According to the United Nations, more than one million people — a third of the population — were directly affected. The storm has since passed over to Cuba and is passing through the Bahamas. Haiti was also inundated with flash flooding, one of the poorest countries in the world, where at least 20 people have died after a river in the south burst its banks.
