The Doomsday Clock has been moved to 85 seconds to midnight, the closest humanity has ever been to global catastrophe.
Set by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the Doomsday Clock is a symbolic measure of how near the world is to self-destruction. In its latest update, scientists warn that escalating nuclear tensions, worsening climate change, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and what they describe as an “information Armageddon” have pushed global risk to unprecedented levels.
The decision comes amid rising geopolitical conflict involving nuclear-armed states, the potential collapse of key arms control agreements, record global emissions, and growing distrust in institutions and information systems. Experts say misinformation and the weaponisation of technology are accelerating division and undermining global cooperation.
In this video, we explain:
• What the Doomsday Clock is and how it works
• Why it has been set to 85 seconds to midnight
• The key threats driving the decision
• What this warning means for the world — and for Australia
Founded by scientists including Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer, the Bulletin says the clock is a warning, not a prediction — and that humanity still has the ability to step back from the brink.
