Maricarmen Abascal was forcibly removed from her Madrid apartment of more than 70 years in September, after being hit with a five-fold increase in rent that she couldn’t afford.
Her heartbreaking story is one that’s all too familiar in Spain’s tourist-heavy cities, and the 87-year-old soon became the living symbol of the country’s spiraling housing crisis.
Since her eviction, she’d been in hospital for severe anxiety and exhaustion.
