A survivor of childhood sexual abuse who became a domestic violence perpetrator has backed a groundbreaking $6 million NSW proposal to remove male offenders from family homes for intensive rehabilitation.
Ivan Clarke was taken from his mother at nine and endured horrific child sexual abuse, addiction, trauma and family loss. Later, he became a perpetrator of domestic violence and says he caused serious harm to his partner and family. After turning his life around through rehabilitation, counselling and study, the Barkinji/Malyangappa man is now helping lead a bold proposal to break the cycle of family violence in NSW.
Teaming up with Rainbow Lodge manager Claude Robinson and former police officer and criminologist Dr Vince Hurley, Clarke is backing Safer Men-Safer Families — a $6 million proposal that would remove male perpetrators from the home and place them in a 24/7 managed residential facility for assessment, supervision and intensive rehabilitation, while women and children remain safely supported at home.
The model works alongside WAGEC and aims to address trauma, addiction, control, mental health and the patterns behind violent behaviour. Supporters say it could transform how Australia responds to domestic and family violence.
