A major rescue mission is underway following a snowstorm that has left close to 1000 people trapped on Mount Everest.
According to Chinese state media, the crisis unfolded after heavy snowfall blanketed the remote Karma Valley on Friday night, dumping heavy snow and cutting off communication and access routes.
Rescuers, including officials and villagers, are now battling deep snow and limited visibility as they attempt to reach stranded trekkers.
Roads in the region remain blocked, and additional teams have been dispatched to deliver supplies and reopen key routes.
Snowfall in the valley, which lies at an elevation averaging 4200 metres, began on Friday evening and persisted throughout Saturday.
Local authorities say hundreds of people have been rescued, but many more remain stranded in arctic temperatures.
As of Sunday, 350 trekkers had reached the small township of Qudang, while contact with the remaining 200-plus trekkers had been made.
One woman told BBC she got a satellite call from her husband asking for help on October 5 at Oga Campsite in the Karma Valley.
The group stopped moving forward on their trek and set up camp because of the heavy snow but during the night they were afraid the snow might collapse their tent.
“He barely slept that night,” the stranded man’s wife told the broadcaster. “He was afraid of being buried if he fell into a deep sleep.”
Another hiker, Eric Wen, told Reuters that three people in his group got hypothermia even with sufficient attire.
During the night they had to clear the snow every 10 minutes.
“Otherwise our tents would have collapsed,” he said.
