Census 2026: What to do if you’re overseas?
What happens if you’re overseas on Tuesday 11 August? Will you still cop a $364-per-day fine for not filling out the Census? SBS finance editor Ricardo Goncalves has the details.
Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and every household in the country as part of the Census of Population and Housing.
That includes Australians, young and old, from metropolitan and regional Australia. Even holidaymakers, international students and temporary visa holders are counted.
It’s often referred to as the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia, akin to a family photograph of the country — but one that’s compulsory.
