At least five homes suffered damage as coastal flooding affected North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Tuesday, September 30, according to local reports citing National Parks workers.
According to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, five unoccupied homes had collapsed in Buxton as of 3:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The state’s Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced it would be closing North Carolina Highway 12 (NC 12) “on the north end of Ocracoke Island after the arrival of the last ferry from Hatteras” on Tuesday due to “increasing ocean overwash.”
As of late Tuesday afternoon, Imelda was a Category 1 hurricane approximately 665 miles (1,070 km) west-southwest of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center.
