Australia’s trucking industry shifts gears toward electric power amid fuel security fears
Australia is one of the biggest consumers of diesel per capita in the world, importing about 80% of its liquid fuels. A lot of that goes to its road freight industry, where diesel-fuelled trucks are used to transport raw materials and goods across long distances in a sparsely populated country.
The industry is on track to become the highest emitting sector in the economy within two years and is considered one of the hardest to decarbonise.
While electric cars have exploded in popularity, the adoption of electric trucks has been hampered by high upfront costs, a lack of charging infrastructure and concerns that the technology cannot handle the loads and distances required, said Professor John Rose, from the University of Sydney’s Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies.
But the recent spike in diesel prices to more than A$3 per litre has shifted the economics in favour of electric trucks.
