Australians react to government’s decision to recognise Palestinian state
Australia’s formal recognition of a Palestinian state has drawn mixed reaction from the community and parliament.
While pro-Palestinian advocates have welcomed the government’s decision, many say it should also be followed by sanctions against the Netanyahu government, amid mounting findings of genocide in Gaza including by a UN special commission of inquiry last week, which Israel firmly rejects.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s declaration outside the United Nations in New York City on Sunday coincided with similar statements by the leaders of the United Kingdom, Canada and Portugal, prompting disapproval from Israel and the Australian Opposition.
