Australian flotilla activists share Israeli detention experience
Watch the moment these Australian activists, who were detained in Israel after participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla mission to deliver aid to Gaza, were greeted by supporters after returning to Australia.
Seven Australians were part of the Gaza-bound aid flotilla, of which four have returned so far.
The activists have alleged they were refused medical treatment, medication and legal counsel while detained by Israeli forces, with activist Abu Bakr Rafiq saying at Sydney Airport: “We were abused, we were tortured, we were kicked, punched, spat at.”
Also at Sydney Airport, activist Juliet Lamont vowed the flotilla collective would return to “show Palestinians solidarity and love”.
Israel’s foreign ministry has previously rejected allegations of mistreatment. SBS News has contacted Israel’s defence ministry for comment.
