Australia dominates day one of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, claiming six gold medals with outstanding performances in swimming and para events. The 4x100m freestyle teams secure gold in both men’s and women’s events, while Lani Pallister wins Australia’s first pool gold, following in her mother’s footsteps as a 1990 champion. The medal haul places Australia at the top of the tally with 13 total medals, including six gold, two silver and five bronze.
Five armed offenders stormed a hotel in Hurlston Park, Sydney’s Inner West, just after 2am during lockout, demanding cash from staff before fleeing the scene. Police are investigating the incident by interviewing staff and reviewing CCTV footage, but no arrests have been made. Staff members were unharmed during the robbery.
A 45-year-old man from Gayndah is dead, and a first-year Queensland police constable is in stable but critical condition after being shot in the leg during a welfare check at Yengarie on the Fraser Coast near Maryborough. The armed man fired at police with a rifle when they arrived just before 6 pm, forcing officers to retreat and call in specialist units. The gunman was later found dead on the property, where a woman and child were also present.
