Artificial snowmaking is key to Australia’s ski industry future, says peak body | The Business

Snow Resorts Australia says Australia’s winter snow economy is worth almost $6 billion, with more than two million visitors annually.

But revenue is at risk of melting away, as the warmest winter on record ends the ski season early. Natural snow coverage on the Australian alps is among the lowest ever recorded.

The value of NSW resort, Thredbo, has been written down by half to $143 million from $292 million in 2022, as the parent company EVT considers selling it off along with a raft of other assets.

While the industry says investment in snowmaking helps mitigate the changing climate, average temperatures are on the rise.

Snow Resorts Australia chief executive, Josh Elliott is confident snowmaking will keep skiers returning.

“We’ve certainly had challenges in terms of natural snow conditions and mother nature hasn’t provided as we hoped… Snowmaking has been more than a 35-year investment and as technology has adapted, Australian resorts have continued to invest and they’ve really been at the forefront of snow management for a number of years,” he said.
