A rapid review is now underway by the Commonwealth, to probe the hack and its legality, with some ministers questioning whether it should be referred to the Australian Federal Police.
The incident has revealed the dangers of the technology, which the government sees as key to future economic growth — having wooed the AI giants to invest in Australia.
