Acclaimed actor Sam Neill has died suddenly and unexpectedly in Sydney aged 78, surrounded by family.
Best known to global audiences for Jurassic Park, The Piano, Dead Calm, The Dish and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Neill built a celebrated career across film, television and theatre, earning a special place in Australian and New Zealand screen history.
His family said his passing came as a shock, while noting he remained cancer free after being diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2022.
Tributes have flowed from across Australia, New Zealand and Hollywood, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, fellow actors and industry leaders honouring Neill’s talent, warmth, dignity and lasting contribution to screen culture.
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill became one of the region’s most respected and versatile actors, equally admired for dramatic, villainous and heroic roles.
He was also known for his memoir Did I Ever Tell You This? and his wine label Two Paddocks. Sam Neill is survived by four children and eight grandchildren, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy in cinema, television and the arts.
