Albanian opposition disrupts parliament after student-led protests
Opposition members in Albania disrupted a parliamentary session by lighting flares and setting off smoke bombs following weeks of student-led anti-government protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Members of the opposition Democratic Party of Albania also blocked access to the podium while parliament voted on a law on the Central Bank.
Student-led demonstrations, fuelled by anger over alleged government corruption, a lack of jobs and poor education standards, have engulfed central Tirana since mid-October and spread to other cities. Protests have frequently turned violent, with hundreds of people injured, including police officers.
Rama, who has refused to resign amid the unrest, has repeatedly called on students to engage in dialogue and introduced new economic measures, including cheaper fuel and more money for poor families.
