Trump says he wouldn’t have released suspects in alleged UK airbase bomb plot
US President Donald Trump has said he “wouldn’t have” released the five people who were arrested in the UK for their suspected involvement in an apparent plot to bomb RAF Fairford — an airbase used by the United States.
UK counter-terror police are leading the investigation after authorities received reports of three “suspicious” white vans near the airbase, which has previously been used by the US to bomb Iran.
The men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and “preparation of a terrorist act” under UK anti-terrorism laws, according to police. It has been reported that tests on materials in the back of the vans established they were “not viable explosives”.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said Iran “might be” involved, adding: “I know the answer … I can be very specific, but I’d rather not say”.
Iran’s embassy in London said that it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” speculation that Iran was involved and criticised “the recent unfounded and malicious speculations published by some British individuals and media outlets attempting to link Iran” to the incident.
