Syria holds first post-Assad parliamentary election
Votes are being counted following Syria’s first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of former president Bashar al-Assad.
The process has been criticised as undemocratic because a large portion of the 210 members will be appointed by interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Critics believe the system favours those who are well-connected.
In a statement, al-Sharaa has labelled the election as a key moment in rebuilding the country after nearly 14 years of civil war.
