The jury’s verdict came back in a minute. Not guilty on all counts. For prominent Sydney barrister Margaret Cunneen SC, who represented acclaimed street artist Anthony Lister, it was a moment of profound relief and vindication after a lengthy trial that saw her client cleared of multiple serious sexual assault charges.
In an exclusive and candid interview, Ms Cunneen revealed the extraordinary speed of the jury’s decision and offered a scathing critique of the police investigation, the media’s approach, and the prevailing “believe all women” narrative in sexual assault cases.
“I’ve never seen a jury come back so quickly in 40 years of being in criminal trials, the majority for the prosecution and seven years now for the defence,” Ms Cunneen said, detailing the dramatic moment the verdicts were delivered.
“The jury came back within a minute … They were in very high spirits, and they couldn’t wait to give the verdicts: not guilty, not guilty, not guilty, not guilty.”
Ms Cunneen said the jury were “smiling at Anthony”, with the judge allowing Lister out of the dock to join his daughter and partner who had been by his side throughout the trial.
Lister, 44, a pioneer of Australia’s street art movement, had pleaded not guilty to nine charges, including five counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
He faced two trials in all, maintaining his innocence from the day he was arrested on charges relating to offences said to have occurred over a six-year period involving five women.
