For 30 years, Josh cycled through addiction, violent outbursts and prison, trapped in a pattern of trauma, drugs and domestic violence. After his marriage broke down, his behaviour escalated into financial abuse, coercive control and serious violence against his wife. Even after a domestic violence order and a prison sentence, he returned straight back to the family home and reoffended.
Josh says court orders and jail alone didn’t change him. What finally made a difference was intensive trauma support and lived-experience rehabilitation through Rainbow Lodge. Now clean, in a healthier place, and speaking openly about the harm he caused, Josh says earlier intervention could have changed everything.
His story sits at the centre of a bigger national debate: are Australia’s domestic violence laws too reactive? Former police officer and criminologist Dr Vince Hurley and former homicide detective Garry Jubelin say the answer is yes. Backing the proposed Safer Men-Safer Families model, they argue families should be kept safe at home while violent men are removed, monitored and rehabilitated in court-mandated residential facilities.
