‘2025 one of the deadliest for the people of Ukraine’: UN Security Council
UN officer-in-charge for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas Kayoko Gotoh has told the Security Council “2025 has been one of the deadliest for the people of Ukraine” as the country endures one of the toughest stages of the nearly four-year war.
Russian troops are slowly grinding forward in the east, and Ukrainian cities and towns are suffering hours-long power cuts due to intensified Russian strikes on the energy grid and other crucial infrastructure.
The UN meeting, requested by Slovenia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Republic of Korea, and the UK, was set to discuss the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, with several members calling for an end to the war.
It comes after leaders of France, Germany and Britain staged a strong show of support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in what they described as a “crucial time” for their European ally as pressure mounts on Ukraine to accept a US-proposed ceasefire plan with Russia.
