‘You have no credibility’: Police Association boss slams left-wing protest group’s ‘rubbish’ claims

Victoria Police Association boss Wayne Gatt has slammed the “rubbish” claims of a left-wing protest group after violence erupted on Melbourne’s streets on Sunday.
 
Two Victorian police officers were hospitalised and will need to spend “weeks” in recovery after a group of so-called anti-racism protesters threw rocks, glass bottles and other projectiles at police who were preventing them from confronting anti-mass migration demonstrators. 
 
A statement released on Sunday by one of the groups that organised the counter protest claimed it was police, not the protesters, who were responsible for the violence. 
 
But Mr Gatt said the claims were “utter rubbish” and the protesters had “no credibility”. 
 
“If you’re so peaceful, if you’re just trying to make your peaceful point, why are you coming with bags of railway ballast? Why are you throwing bottles with glass shards in them?” the Police Association boss asked.
