When the US offered $100 million worth of gold to buy Greenland
The Trump administration’s intention to acquire Greenland has sparked international criticism, but it’s not the first time a United States leader has attempted to buy the island.
In 1867, the US secretary of state floated the idea, but no formal offer was made. Then, after World War Two, then president Harry Truman made an official bid of US$100 million ($149 million) in gold, but was knocked back.
The US maintained military presence in the territory, but gave up on attempts to buy Greenland – until now.
