Wadeye festival brings community together as ‘one family’ after conflict | ABC NEWS

This year’s Yidiyi Festival pulled in several hundred spectators, mostly made up of Wadeye locals and people from small Aboriginal homelands in the surrounding region. The sentiment of coming together rings true to the festival’s origins. It was founded by traditional owners in 2023 partly in response to a long period of conflict in the community. Wadeye is one of the largest Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory with about 2,000 residents and began as a Catholic mission in the 1930s, then known as Port Keats.
