Vision loss and self-harm – NT government warned of ‘significant’ health risks in custody | ABC NEWS

Documents seen by the ABC reveal executives within the NT’s Department of Corrections were warned of “critical health and safety hazards” in police watch houses during the peak of the Territory’s custody crisis in 2025.

The leaked memo’s show almost half of more than 100 detainees at the Palmerston Watchhouse in late 2024 had “unknown health needs” and had not received a health review upon entering the facility.

The revelation comes months after a mother-of-five died in a police watch house in Tennant Creek with Aboriginal legal and health organisations once again raising the alarm over the provision of health services in custody settings. Olivana Lathouris has this report for Stateline Northern Territory.
