US seize Venezuelan oil tanker
US forces have seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, in an escalation of Donald Trump’s campaign against the country and Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro.
Accusations that the Venezuelan government has supported and facilitated drug trafficking efforts into the US, a charge the Venezuelan leader has repeatedly denied, has been central to the Trump administration’s rhetoric and has fuelled a months-long deadly campaign of US strikes on boats off the coast of Venezuela.
Venezuelan Assembly President, Jorge Rodriguez has recently denounced what he characterised as a decade of economic, political, and conspiratorial attacks against Venezuela, accusing the United States of military threats and attempting regime change to seize the country’s natural resources including oil, rare earths, and precious minerals.
