UK’s thoughts on King Charles’ upcoming US tour | ABC NEWS

📍King Charles and Queen Camilla are about to arrive in the US for a four-day visit. The trip has been timed to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence from Britain, but all eyes will be on whether Charles can reset relations between the US and the UK.

It comes in the wake of a shooting at a press gala in Washington, in which Trump and other members of his US administration were the likely targets, according to acting US Attorney-General Todd Blanche.

“Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of government, we can confirm the state visit by their majesties will proceed as planned,” a Palace spokesperson said after the incident.

The president and first lady Melania Trump will host the royal couple for a private tea in Washington, DC.

On Tuesday, the King will address a joint sitting of Congress, becoming just the second British monarch to do so following his mother Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. A state dinner will be held at the White House that evening.

During the visit, the King and president will hold a bilateral meeting, as will the Queen and first lady.

The royal couple will also visit New York, Virginia and Bermuda, a British overseas territory where the King is the head of state.

Trump and the first lady have twice embarked on state visits to the UK, their most recent in September last year.

Public opinion is divided about the visit. Opinion polls in the UK show Trump is deeply unpopular, and some politicians have said it should be called off.

Outside Buckingham Palace in London, the ABC spoke to people who were both for and against the visit.
