Trump on Canada trade talks: ‘They have ripped us off for years’
Donald Trump has said “Canada has taken advantage” of trade relations with the US “for years”, downplaying the importance of future business relations amid rising tensions between the two countries.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said: “We don’t need the things they have, they need what we have … they do most of their business with us”.
The comments come after trade talks between the two countries collapsed due to tariff disputes.
Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods after trade negotiations with Washington failed to prevent new tariffs being imposed, targeting products including steel, dairy, agricultural equipment and electronics.
Washington imposed 50 per cent tariffs on about US$20 billion worth of Canadian exports, to which Canada announced tit-for-tat retaliatory tariffs on about US$28 billion worth of American goods.
