Toronto among world’s worst major cities globally for air quality as wildfire smoke engulfs the city
More than 800 wildfires have broken out across Canada, with one near Armstrong, Ontario, trapping freight train operators.
The crew was later rescued, with train services suspended in the area amid evacuation orders being announced for nearby communities.
So far, 1.9 million hectares have burned, with most of the fires in the central provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
Toronto residents woke up to a city blanketed in smoke as Toronto ranked the worst among major cities globally for air quality on Wednesday.
IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company, ranked Toronto as having the worst air quality globally, surpassing Kinshasa and Delhi.
“I think you have to be silly if you’re not going to be concerned about climate change. It’s definitely here, it’s definitely happening, and it’s happening globally,” one resident said.
