Three nations willing to kill on Australian soil, says ASIO chief
ASIO head Mike Burgess says there are at least three countries willing to assassinate political dissidents on Australian soil.
“It’s entirely possible the regimes would try to hide their involvement by hiring criminal cutouts, as Iran did when directing its [antisemitic] arson attacks,” he said at the Lowy Lecture in Sydney on Tuesday night.
He did not mention any countries by name but did cite concerns of foreign interference by Russia and Iran.
Burgess said he publicly announced that ASIO was aware in order to put the three countries “on notice” and that they will “do our damnedest to stop it before it happens”.
