Three men died in a marine rescue tragedy at Ballina Bar when a Marine Rescue boat capsized while responding to a yachtie in distress off the break wall. Volunteers Bill Ewen, 78, a 10-year veteran, and Frank Petsch lost their lives along with the yachtie they were attempting to rescue. Three other volunteer rescuers remain hospitalised with significant injuries, and a coronial investigation will examine the capsizing incident.
